Tell us more about the two events in which you recently participated. "I took part in the "Recyclass Unwrapped" webinar series, which aims at making more visible to the public the work of Recyclass and its members. I had the opportunity to participate in the “Material Recycling Focus Session – HDPE” during the Plastics Recycling Show Europe organized by Crain Communications and Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE). This annual forum brings together the entire plastic value chain with recyclers to foster collaboration on circular economy topics. In both events, I presented the challenges surrounding the circularity of plastic packaging, the integration of PCR and recyclability, as well as Albéa's commitments and initiatives on Responsible Packaging. » What are the key messages to remember from these two events? “The use of PCR is key in the packaging sector for the circularity of plastic: in Europe, packaging accounts for 40% of plastic demand. Many actors of the cosmetics industry, including Albéa, have committed to integrating PCR in the composition of their products. Depending on the resin, this may raise issues on supply, safety, technical and aesthetic constraints. An optimal Design for Recycling approach is therefore essential for 3 main reasons: - To promote the market launch of quality PCR materials and thus contribute to the circular economy for plastics. - To fulfill our commitments (New Plastics Economy Global Commitment of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation) and enable our clients to fulfill theirs. - To anticipate regulatory changes at national, European and global levels. To do so, many organizations propose guidelines and methodologies to assess recyclability, and there is a strong need for harmonization on these documents to make value chain efforts more consistent. Recyclass is working on harmonizing these elements. As a member, Albéa actively contributes to this effort. Our return on experience shows that Design for Recycling requires fundamental changes in product design and especially product differentiation. It requires collaborative work across the entire value chain to move in the right direction, but also to ensure that the market is ready to embrace these changes.” What are Albéa's ambitions for 2021? “In 2021, we must continue our efforts on PCR integration and recyclability challenges, increase Albéa's expertise on these subjects by reinforcing our network and support our customers by offering circular solutions.
